The 20 credit module, Care of the Child/Young Person with Cancer, aims to develop existing knowledge and explore key issues in the context of caring for children and young people with cancer.  

This module is offered as either stand alone or within the CPD framework, and is suitable for registered staff working in a relevant practice area. 

Additionally, it aims to promote discussion and exploration of sensitive and challenging issues within a supported environment, facilitating learning to be taken back into practice. 

This module, which can be taken at either level 6 (UZURR4-20-3) or level 7 (UZURR5-20-M), is offered as a partnership between University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and UWE Bristol,  and benefits from a module team consisting of speciality practitioners, educators, dual learning environments and specialist resources. 

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

At level 6 (undergraduate level):

• demonstrate an understanding of the epidemiology, biology, and treatment of cancer in children and young people, including common side effects.
• identify the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment on the patient and their family, considering both clinical and ethical challenges, and the role of multidisciplinary team members.
• evaluate the importance of research, policies and practices in improving outcomes and advancing care in childhood cancer. 

At level 7 (Masters level):

• demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the epidemiology and biology of cancer in children and young people, including critical evaluation of available treatments and their outcomes.
• critically evaluate the effects of a cancer diagnosis on patients and their families, incorporating clinical and ethical challenges, and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of your professional role within the multidisciplinary team in supporting patients and families throughout their treatment.
• critique research themes, policies, and practices aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people with cancer.

The module syllabus typically includes:

• The organisation, management and guiding principles of child and young person's cancer care
• The clinical context of childhood cancer with specific reference to: neuroblastoma, sarcoma and leukaemia
• The diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer in children and young people
• The impact of cancer on the family and supporters
• Ethical, legal and professional decision-making in children and young person's cancer services
• Palliative care
• Stem cell transplantation
• Surgical interventions
• Radiotherapy
• Self-awareness and professionalism

 

Learning and Teaching

This module is delivered through a blended learning approach which includes seminars, tutorials, interactive critical discussions, lectures and case study exploration.  




Study time

Attendance on Day 1 is essential, as it provides the key information and guidance you will need to successfully complete the assessment. 

You are expected to attend all scheduled study days to support the successful completion of the course.

It is advised not to arrange annual leave or other non-essential commitments during scheduled study days.




Assessment

Assessment for this module comprises the following:

At level 6 and level 7

• A 10 minute poster presentation and up to 10 minutes of Q&A (maximum 20 minutes). 
• Students are required to explore and examine a relevant challenge in Children and Young People's cancer care and evaluate its implications within clinical practice. 
• Formative assessment throughout the module will include group work that demonstrates understanding of cancer in children and young people, including group work/discussion, reflective practice, self-assessment and giving feedback. Within the module, there will be dedicated student/tutor time for the purpose of assessment support.
