This 20 credit module, Complexities of Caring for Older People, aims to provide registered health or social care practitioners working within primary and/or secondary care settings with the knowledge and skills required to deliver best practice within their professional field to older people. 

You will critically consider current policy drivers related to older adult care and develop a proposal for a service improvement initiative or innovation that is related to their field and context of practice.

On successful completion of this module, you will achieve the following learning outcomes:

At level 6 (UZTRWM-20-3)

• Analyse literature, research and policy related to the complex care of older adults

• Identify areas for service improvement and innovation within their practice and formulate recommendations regarding improvement in care and services

• Analyse the opportunities for and challenges to integrated practice in managing complex care needs in older people

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health promotion and disease prevention in older people and its application to their practice

• Critically appraise ethical and legal issues relating to their professional practice in the care of older people.

At level 7 (UZTRWN-20-M)

• Demonstrate in-depth and advanced knowledge and analysis of the literature, research and policy related to the complex care of older adults

• Synthesise a wide range of evidence in order to initiate and lead service improvement, reaching judgements which extend beyond taught concepts

• Critically evaluate the opportunities for and challenges to integrated practice in managing complex care needs in older people

• Evidence comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health promotion and disease prevention in older people and evaluate their application to practice.

• Critically appraise ethical and legal issues relating to their professional practice in the care of older people.

Learning and Teaching

This 20 credit module utilises multiple learning methods which include lectures, seminars and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL).

The module duration consists of seven days, one of which (day 7) is a non-attendance day for directed study (please see the course timetable). You will need to be enrolled on the module prior to day one to access the learning and directed study material on our virtual learning environment (Blackboard).

Students undertaking the module at degree level (level 6) and master's degree level (level 7) are co-taught facilitating knowledge exchange through discussions during seminars and group work. 

Assessment

Assessment for this module comprises comprises of both formative and summative assessment where students will be given the opportunity to explore progress and receive support towards the summative submission.

You are required to complete a 3,000 word written assignment that will enable you to critically consider relevant literature, research and policy to identify a service improvement related to your field/context of practice in the care of older people.
