Course overview
This distance learning 15 credit level 7 Computed Tomography Technology module aims to enhance your practice by increasing your knowledge of the physical principles and safety issues of CT.
This module covers the safety aspects and clinical governance of CT, thereby producing competent and proficient professionals. This will enable you to apply this knowledge clinically in a safe and appropriate manner that offers a quality service to patients.
On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical and systematic understanding of the physics and technology of computed tomography.
- critically evaluate the technical quality of CT images to determine errors and determine remedial action.
- critically evaluate current CT principles, safety, legislation, dosimetry and guidelines and apply these appropriately in a clinical setting.
- critically evaluate CT protocols and reflect on their clinical suitability.
- critically evaluate published research and literature in CT imaging.

Content
The module syllabus typically includes:
- the physical principles underlying x-ray generation in CT, attenuation and beam quality; detector systems, collimators and filtration; scan modes
- exposure parameters and their impact on image appearances
- image reconstruction and quality
- artefacts and artefact reduction
- Hounsfield values and windowing
- post processing techniques; to include 2D, 3D and virtual endoscopy
- cross sectional anatomy
- Quality Assurance and control tests in CT, reasoning behind tests, protocols and current legal and recommended requirements of such.
- CT contrast media
Safe working practice:
- CT examination dosimetry
- radiation protection (patient and staff), current regulations and other relevant legislation, and guidelines
- dose modulation principles and application to clinical practice.
The module will typically be delivered using a blended approach of online lectures and tutorials, online materials, to facilitate learning.
Lectures will introduce you to the physical principles of CT technology and the clinical applications of CT.
Additional lectures by recognised experts will expose you to current CT technology and its applications in clinical practice and challenge the students thinking on existing practice.
Directed study based on critiquing up to date literature and practice will be used to further stimulate your learning. The virtual learning environment (VLE) will be used to support your learning and to facilitate sharing and collaboration in problem solving.
This module is completed over 10 weeks with you being expected to fully contribute each week. Whilst this can be done in your own time, it is highly recommended that you look to negotiate regular study time, recommended at half day a week equivalent, with your manager.
An OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) delivered online.
The assessment for this course consists of two tasks: an exam and a written assignment.
The exam assesses understanding of physical principles, image appearances, and applications. The written assignment focuses on a work-based project centered around Quality Assurance processes and evaluation.
Formative assessments include online quizzes and polls for real-time feedback, as well as peer review of assignment drafts. You will have the opportunity to undertake a mock exam and submit a draft written assignment for constructive feedback.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for admission to this pathway, you must be a HCPC Registered Radiographer in employment and have experience in working in CT, with possession of a BSc Hons in Diagnostic Radiography or appropriate professional qualification.
Applicants must have managerial support for their studies, including a commitment that appropriate facilities, relevant clinical experience and time will be made available to support their studies (15 hours a week) and a suitably qualified mentor.
