This 20 credit module, Chronic and Acute Care Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), aims to develop registered practitioners to confidently and competently contribute to the care and management of individuals with COPD. It aims to develop expert knowledge, understanding, and critical analysis that is evidence based.

The module is available at level 6 (UZWSVS-20-3) and level 7 (UZWSVT-20-M).

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

At level 6 (undergraduate level)

• demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.    

• explore and evaluate the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of both chronic and acute care of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, in both primary, community and secondary care (including pharmacological and non-pharmacological management).    

• explore and evaluate the assessment, care and management of complications and therapies for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, in relation to psychological, physiological, and socio-political aspects.    

• critically analyse and evaluate health literature and apply how evidence-based practice influences the diagnosis, treatment, and impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease on service users, carers and their families.

At level 7 (Masters level)

• demonstrate and apply detailed knowledge and understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.    

• critically examine the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of both chronic and acute care of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, in both primary, community and secondary care (including pharmacological and non-pharmacological management).    

• critically explore the assessment, care, and management of complications and therapies for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, in relation to psychological, physiological, and socio-political aspects. 

• critically analyse and evaluate health literature, providing independent perspectives and applying how evidence-based practice influences the diagnosis, treatment, and impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease on service users, carers and their families.

• Treating tobacco dependency
• Pharmacological therapy

• Pulmonary rehabilitation

Management of exacerbations of COPD in primary and secondary care

• Palliative management of COPD
• Self-management; personalised care planning
• Investigations and treatment
• Integrated care pathways
• Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV)
• Psychological and sociological support for service users, carers and their families
• Assessing and supporting mental well-being
• Comorbidities and differential diagnosis

Scheduled learning includes online lectures, online seminars and face-to-face workshops.   

Independent learning includes hours engaged with essential reading especially activities online, case study preparation and presentation.
