On successful completion of this level 7 (Masters level) Dissertation module, you will be able to:

• produce a comprehensive and critical review of the literature

• demonstrate breadth and depth of understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of an investigation

• critically evaluate and explore aspects of the research process including issues of reliability, validity, ethical issues and constraints

• evaluate and contribute to theoretical and methodological debate in their discipline area

• design and execute a well planned research study based on relevant research methodology, within a framework of research governance

• mapping of specific learning outcomes for the dissertation will be dependent upon the nature of the study and the methodology employed.

You will work with your dissertation supervisor to confirm aims, questions and proposed research strategy and set out a programme of work. You will demonstrate the ability to work independently and manage your study.

Content

You will participate in a dissertation progress seminar, in which all students give presentations and answer questions about the purpose, research strategy and management of their dissertation.

Learning and Teaching

Independent learning underpins the teaching and learning strategy on the dissertation module. The student will have an identified dissertation supervisor and supervision includes contact hours with the supervisor and formative feedback on draft work. 8 hours of workshops are available for students. 

Study time

Eight hours of workshops and 12 hours of supervision totalling 20 contact hours.

Assessment

The assessment strategy for this module is in the form of a portfolio of coursework. The dissertation portfolio should not exceed a maximum of 10,000 words (excluding reference lists) and consists of:

• a journal article prepared for submission to a journal of their choice.

• an explanation and justification of the academic journal the paper is (hypothetically) written for.

• a reflection on their research.

Across the three elements of the portfolio, all learning outcomes must be demonstrated. Formative assessment occurs throughout the module as you work with the allocated dissertation supervisor.
