This 20 credit module, Injection Therapy, will introduce you to the theoretical and practical principles of injection therapy for musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, providing you with the clinical skills to practise as a safe, competent and autonomous clinician in this area.

On successful completion of this level 7 (Masters level) module, you will be able to:

• demonstrate clinical proficiency and critical use of evidence based clinical reasoning in the safe and appropriate documentation and delivery of a range of injection therapy techniques as part of the holistic management of Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions in person centred care

• demonstrate a critical understanding of the use of injection therapy within an individual's professional scope of practice including the legal framework and regulatory control of medicines; synthesise and apply pharmacological knowledge and understanding as part of clinical reasoning and shared decision making to minimise risk and adverse effects/reactions

• utilise critical application of knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology underpinning clinical reasoning in the use of injection therapy in the management of MSK conditions, demonstrating an understanding of the measurement and evaluation of outcomes to optimise patient care.

Content

This module will typically cover the following aspects of injection therapy and supervised practice based learning:

• Detailed musculoskeletal anatomy relevant to injection techniques

• Safety and competence in the delivery of injection therapy

• Application of theory and evidence base of injection therapy to practice

• Evidence-based clinical reasoning and decision making (including shared decision making) underpinning the use injection therapy in Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions

• Applied pharmacology

• Safety aspects - information, consent, communication and documentation

• Practical techniques for the peripheral joint and peri-articular injection and aspiration

• Legal aspects relating to consent and non-medical prescribing/medicine management (Patient group directions and clinical responsibilities)

• Consideration of evaluation of outcome of injection therapy intervention.

Learning and Teaching

Learning will be a blended approach with some online lectures and seminars and a variety of face-to-face methods including seminars and practical teaching sessions, supported with online resources and independent study.

Theoretical and practice learning will be underpinned by supervised clinical practice and recorded in a digital log/portfolio. Reflective practise will be encouraged throughout all aspects of the module.

Assessment

Assessment for this module comprises:

• a Structured Observed Practical Examination (SOPE) - the SOPE (maximum of 30 minutes) comprises a case-based practical demonstration of injection therapy and a clinical reasoning discussion, assessing competence and safety

• a practice-based log comprises of a minimum of 10 supervised peripheral joint injections with evidence of critical reflection on their injection delivery and clinical reasoning. The practice-based log is assessed by the designated clinical supervisor on a pass/fail basis to confirm demonstration of safe practice in the clinical environment.

Formative SOPE sessions will be integrated within practical sessions, you will also be given feedback during supervised clinical practice.
