The 20 credit level 6 (UZTSVU-20-3) or level 7 (UZTRVP-20-M) module, Leadership and Innovation, will allow you to critically reflect on the development of your own leadership skills to consider how best to deliver and enhance collaborative working across organisational boundaries and systems. You will appraise theories of organisational culture, leadership and change and your influence as 'enablers' to service improvement, quality, governance and the service user experience.

During the course, we will explore coaching and mentoring tools that focus on developing leadership skills, knowledge and professional practices that enhance you and your team's performance.

Alongside this, you will learn to utilise professional influencing and negotiating skills as part of your leadership repertoire whilst being able to demonstrate an understanding of the broad economic structure of the NHS and how this impacts on local finance and organisation at unit level you will reflect on this structure and the policy drivers that impact on service users, individuals and teams in a system in perpetual change.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

At level 6

• analyse leadership theories and traits to reflect on the development of personal leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams and organisational boundaries.    
• appraise theories of organisational and team culture to apply strategies that support change, innovation, and service improvement for the delivery of high-quality care.    
• explain how economic, structural, and policy factors influence health and social care delivery, reflecting on how leadership, negotiation, and coaching skills can enhance individual and team performance.

At level 7

• critically evaluate leadership theories, traits, and styles that inform personal leadership development, team theories and the facilitation of collaborative practice across organisational and professional boundaries.    
• critically appraise the theories of organisational and team culture, with the approaches that enable change, innovation, and quality improvement in complex care environments.    
• critically evaluate how current policies and economic factors shape health and social care, and apply leadership, negotiation, and coaching skills to improve team and individual performance for long-term service quality.

Content

The module syllabus typically includes:

• Leadership theories, models, traits and styles.
• Quality Improvement and sustainability for service development and enhancement.
• Understanding change, innovation and transformation in health and social care systems. Contemporary policy drivers and the current landscape within health and social care systems.
• Political, regulatory and cultural enablers and barriers to successful change.
• Negotiation, influencing, coaching and mentoring skills to coach and mentor the development of individuals and enhance team performance to ensure quality service delivery.
• Understanding oneself in relation to a leadership role - developing emotional intelligence to enhance culture and team dynamics for quality service delivery.
• Inter collegial/professional/cross boundary-sector working.
• The capabilities, practices and norms that promote and contribute to the formation of and effective working relationships of teams.

Learning and Teaching

The module will be delivered through seminars, action learning sets, group work, problem solving exercises, critical review of contemporary research and policy, utilisation of prior knowledge, reflection and challenge from peers.

Assessment

Assessment for this module comprises a poster presentation (15 minutes maximum) which will comprise five minutes (maximum) presentation and ten minutes (maximum) of critical questions.

Formative feedback will be given by facilitators throughout the module and there will be opportunity for peer led discussion. A dedicated assignment support session is included in the module timetable.
