This 20 credit Pre-Hospital Trauma Care module is for registered practitioners looking to further develop and expand their knowledge and practice of pre-hospital trauma care. The module can be taken at level 6 (BSc level) or level 7 (Masters level) and is relevant to paramedics and emergency care practitioners.

On successful completion of the module, you will achieve the following learning outcomes.

Level 6 module (UZYYGY-20-3):

• Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology and epidemiology of major trauma

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of assessment techniques to identify the injuries sustained by patients in traumatic incidents

• Evaluate the communication, coordination and collaboration of resources required to deliver care to the trauma patient from the point of injury through to definitive care

• Demonstrate an effective critical understanding of organ and system-specific injuries, their evidence-based treatment and management

• Evaluate the pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the intended treatment plan for the patient with injury through major trauma.

Level 7 module (UZYYH3-20-M):

• Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology and epidemiology of major trauma

• Identify and critically appraise the evidence to  assess, and techniques to identify the injuries sustained by patients in traumatic incidents

• Critically evaluate the communication, coordination and collaboration of resources required to deliver care to the trauma patient from the point of injury through to definitive care

• Demonstrate an effective critical understanding of organ and system-specific injuries, their evidence-based treatment and management

• Critically evaluate the pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the intended treatment plan for the patient with injury through major trauma.

Content

A typical syllabus for the module will include, but not limited to:

• Aetiology and UK pre-hospital trauma systems
• Assessment at traumatic incidents - risk, mechanism and patient
• Traumatic injuries and evidence-based treatment and management - system by system
• Communication, collaboration and coordination of resources in pre-hospital trauma care

The module has been designed using a mix of face-to-face and online learning. 

A variety of approaches will be used which may include technology-enhanced learning material, online web content, video presentations, lectures, seminars, case-based learning, enquiry-based learning, workshops and simulation.

Assessment will be an online examination which will include a range of questions including scenario-based short answer questions, long answer questions and multiple choice questions (MCQs).
