The aim of this 20 credit module, Promoting Sexual Health in Practice (available at level 6 and level 7), is to develop knowledge and understanding of the factors that contribute to good sexual health.

This course takes a broad approach drawing on a range of disciplines including social sciences, clinical nursing, medicine and public health.

It is particularly suitable if you wish to gain an introduction to sexual health and confidence in promoting sexual health awareness in a range of settings, e.g. primary care/general practice; schools; community care settings; hospitals; prisons; youth centres; and as such is appropriate for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, teachers, youth workers and health and social care staff.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sexual health in the context of current policy, and local priorities for practice.

• discuss and evaluate factors that can impact upon an individual's sexual health and wellbeing including personal attitudes and beliefs.

• reflect on current practice when responding to sexual health needs ensuring an evidence-based approach.

At level 7 (UZVSJC-20-M)

• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sexual health in the context of current policy, and local priorities for practice.

• critically evaluate factors that can impact upon an individual's sexual health and wellbeing including personal attitudes and beliefs.

• critically reflect on current practice when responding to sexual health needs ensuring an evidence-based approach.

Content

Topics covered will typically include:

• Public health perspectives of sexual health

• Understanding values and attitudes that influence sexual health

• Questions to help raise and address sexual health issues

• Broad overview of screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections

• Contraception methods and rationale for use

• The legal and practical aspects of young people and sexual health

• Broad overview of sexual difficulty, assault, intimate partner violence and female genital mutilation

• Medico/legal aspects of sexual health

Learning and Teaching

Teaching will be delivered over five consecutive days by specialist nurses on the topics of contraception and sexual health, and includes speakers who are experts in their field.

Scheduled learning

Approximately 40 hours which includes lectures, technology enhanced learning materials, seminars, workshops and tutorials.

Independent learning

 Approximately 160 hours which includes hours engaged with essential reading, preparation prior to study days and project planning and completion.

Upon susccesful completion of the module, 20 credits at either level 3 or level M will be awarded.

200 contact hours.

This module will be assessed through a 10-minute individual presentation plus up to 10 minutes of questions and answers where you are required to examine and analyse an area of sexual health practice and make recommendations to improve practice.
