Creative Science Communication and Public Engagement will support you to develop your creative ideas into viable projects. The module will help you to devise and plan creative science communication and public engagement projects informed by and grounded in the key concepts, theories and research at the forefront of the field, as well as your own professional reflective practice.

The course takes a student-centred approach, covering key areas such as creative idea development, inclusivity, project planning and evaluation, but also allowing you to explore areas of your own interest in depth. Regular tutor feedback will allow you to develop and reflect on the creative aspects of your work throughout the course.

On successful completion, you will be confident in applying current best practices to develop original creative science communication and public engagement ideas, and be able to critically reflect on your own and others' practice informed by the forefront of theory, research and professional practice.

Creative Science Communication and Public Engagement is a 15 credit, level 7 (Masters level) module.

Content

During the course, you will develop skills focused around embedding creativity, inclusivity and evaluation into your science communication or public engagement practice.

Through structured, self-paced learning activities and tutor interaction, you will be encouraged to reflect on how cutting-edge theory and research can inform your practice. 

Topics covered may include, for example, creative idea development, inclusivity and accessibility, project planning and management, presentation and facilitation skills, and project evaluation, but these will be updated from time-to-time to reflect up-to-date developments within science communication and public engagement.

Learning and Teaching

The module is taught asynchronously across 10 weeks (including two private study weeks), which will allow you to take the course at your own pace and fit it around your work or other commitments. The course is designed to be completed with a student commitment of approximately 10 hours per week on average.

The module is taught online in a variety of formats appropriate to the topics covered, including:

• Narrated presentations
• Tutor-designed, problem-based learning activities
• Guided and self-directed readings
• Asynchronous feedback opportunities such as online discussion forums
• Live online seminars

You will be supported to develop advanced knowledge and reflective practice in one or more aspects of the course content through independent study. Private study weeks allow students to catch up on course content, dive deeper into a particular area of interest, or prepare for the assessment.

Assessment

The assessment comprises a 1,500-word grant application and accompanying 500-word critical reflection.

Throughout the module, you will be encouraged to devise a proposed creative science communication or public engagement project idea which you will write up into a grant application, based on a grant or tender opportunity.

In the critical reflection, you will be able to evidence your reflections throughout the course, including the creative development of your project idea and engagement with relevant areas of practice, theory and research.

On successful completion, you will receive transferrable credits (ECTS).
