This 15 credit module, Environmental and Ecological Consultancy, offers a practical bridge between academic study and industry application. The module focuses on critical skills such as conducting surveys, preparing compliant and effective reports, and understanding relevant legislation and planning policies. 

With options to specialise in either environmental or ecological streams, this module integrates hands-on case studies and simulations to prepare you for a professional consultancy role.

Content

The module syllabus typically includes the following:

• overview of environmental and ecological consultancy
• the importance of consultancy in environmental protection and wildlife conservation 
• survey methodologies and standards for species and habitat survey
• mitigation, management and monitoring
• competencies for species survey 
• environmental and ecological data analysis, interpretation and visualisation techniques 
• reporting 
• legislation and policy 
• environmental impact assessments within UK and global contexts 
• stakeholder engagement communication.

Learning and Teaching

Scheduled learning includes interactive lectures, practitioner seminars (where possible), tutorials, workshops, practical field classes, and computer practical classes.

Independent learning includes hours engaged with essential reading, assignment preparation and completion.

Assessment

Assessment for this module comprises a 2,000-word survey report based on a simulated or real-world case study, simulating the responsibilities and challenges faced by professional consultants. The report should include data visualisation, clear data synthesis, and recommendations.
