Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Design, Construction and Operations is fast becoming the industry standard approach to designing, analysing, and managing the building lifecycle.

By completing the module BIM in Design Co-ordination, you will develop an advanced understanding of BIM approaches for retrieving, analysing and integrating information to aid decision-making, and using appropriate BIM tools.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will achieve the following learning outcomes.

• Critically evaluate current practice in the use of BIM throughout the various stages of the design process 
• Analyse the wider range of BIM processes and tools and select appropriate solutions, recognising the importance of communication, coordination of design information 
• Apply BIM tools for generation, reviewing, analysis, simulation, and co-ordination of design information 
• Recognise the benefits of BIM to support distributed work processes, with multiple team members working on the same project
• Apply work sharing methods and techniques of design information
• Assess collaborative practices in a multidisciplinary team

This module can be taken as a standalone module, or used to build up credit towards a named postgraduate qualification (PG Certificate, PG Diploma or Masters) within our School of Architecture and Environment Awards: MSc Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Design Construction and Operations and MSc Construction Project Management. 

As this module carries university accreditation, once you have submitted your booking form, you will be required to provide the following supporting information for the Programme Leader to review and formally accept your application as required by the university.

Learning and Teaching

The module is delivered by way of five study days of face-to-face teaching. Recorded lectures and the use of email discussion groups, virtual learning environments (VLEs) and other technology-aided means are also employed. 

Study time

This module will involve a total of 30 hours direct contact time (on campus). 

Students undertake a significant amount of directed and independent study between and after the sessions. 

To complete the module and assessment, if taken, we recommend students allocate approximately 150 hours including taught sessions and personal study time. This is only a guideline and will depend on the participants' motivation and learning abilities. 

Assessment

The module will be assessed through a practical skills assessment and a written report.
