Upon successful completion of the 20 credit module, Working with a Person Experiencing Mental Health Crisis, you will be able to:

• critically analyse organisational systems and propose innovations to develop working alliances with service users, families and carers.
• critically examine underlying ethics of principles of recovery and social inclusion within crisis work and demonstrate methods of applying such ethics in practice.
• critically reflect on reducing fragmentation between service provisions while assisting a person having a crisis, demonstrating innovations in whole system working.
• critically evaluate and propose policies that may assist working within complexity of case load management whilst focus is on assisting the service user.
• critically explore documentation use within crisis/intensive teams and propose organisational innovations in mediating such work while assisting a service user.

Content

The course syllabus typically includes:

• The vulnerable adult - includes service users presenting with complexities of life events and inequalities alongside various substance misuses.
• Carers, friends and family - Burden of care and assessment.
• Reflective practice - increasing capabilities in novel situations; professional self-care.
• Whole team working - collaboration over various sectors.
• Working with complexity - challenging resources and utilisation.
• New technologies - adapting communication as guided by Mental Health Crisis Care Concordat.
  
  

Learning and Teaching

Teaching will include seminars, action learning sets, critical review of research and policy and critical reflection. Additionally, there will be emphasis on social media for distant learning and emphasise on you collaborating online to develop study.

Assessment

At level 7 (Masters level): A written assignment guided by construction of your own case study, with emphasis on organisation innovation in assisting a person experiencing a crisis.
