Course overview

This module explores the complexity of educational leadership, recognising that educational organisations are dynamic human systems shaped by the interactions of individuals within them. Drawing on Complexity Theory as an overarching framework, the module introduces key concepts such as self-organisation, emergence, and unpredictability to help you understand how educational systems evolve and adapt.

A central focus is the challenge for leaders of navigating systems that are constantly changing rather than static. The module also examines the human dimension of leadership, emphasising the need to balance coherence and direction from top-down leadership with the flexibility and innovation that emerge from bottom-up contributions.

Effective leadership in complex environments involves creating conditions where individuals experience agency and autonomy, while maintaining alignment with organisational goals. Identifying and managing this balance is a critical challenge for leaders. Through engaging with these ideas, you will develop your understanding of how leadership operates within complex systems and how leaders respond to uncertainty and change.

The assessment requires you to interview an educational leader, exploring their experiences of complexity in practice. You will then analyse and critically reflect on how their experiences relate to the concepts studied in the module

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate approaches to education as a complex systems.
  • Analyse complex systems approaches in a specific educational context
  • Synthesise others’ approaches to leading and managing complexity in educational environments.
