Content and learning outcomes
Explores agri-food systems through a scientific “limits to growth” lens, emphasising that the economy sits within environmental boundaries rather than prioritising yield or profit alone.
- Provides a critical review of current farming and food production practices, focusing on solutions such as nature-based approaches, regenerative agriculture, and ecosystem service provision in response to climate and biodiversity challenges.
- Develops strong analytical and practical skills, including assessing environmental impacts, working with field and laboratory data, and communicating evidence-based findings.
- Encourages multi- and transdisciplinary thinking, helping students evaluate the social, ecological, and economic dimensions of sustainable food production.
- Includes hands-on learning through field trips, lab sessions, and applied research, culminating in designing and reporting on an independent research project.
Learning and teaching
Teaching and learning methods will include a mix of synchronous and asynchronous activities including webinars, meetings, lectures, readings, tasks and activities alongside independent study and tutor support.

Prerequisites
Entry is open to those who:
- hold a first degree (minimum 2:2 honours) in a relevant subject such as (but not limited to) earth and environment, sustainability, geography, agriculture, biology, food science, nutrition, business and management, public health, sociology, politics or public administration, or
- have qualifications and/or experience considered to be equivalent by the Programme Manager
If you don't meet the above grade requirements but have at least 12 months relevant professional experience and/ or equivalent qualifications, we'll consider you on an individual basis.
