This module is delivered in partnership with Children Hospice South West.

This module will provide learners with the opportunity to advance their knowledge, understanding and application of holistic Paediatric End-of-Life care.

This module aims to advance learners’ ability to critically evaluate and apply safe, evidence‑based approaches to the holistic and collaborative assessment, planning and delivery of care at end of life. It also aims to support learners in developing the skills to provide holistic care for babies, children, young people, and support to families and colleagues following death.

The syllabus would typically include:

Holistic care planning for end-of-life care:

• Parallel planning
• Advanced care planning
• Effective communication with children, families and members of the interdisciplinary teams and services
• Safe and effective clinical care when assessing, planning and delivering care at end-of-life:
• Symptom management
• Clinical assessment at the end-of-life using the A-E approach
• Care planning

Appropriate ways of managing holistic care and support after death for children, families and colleagues:

• Complicated grief
• Processes for care of a body after death
• Bereavement support for families
• Bereavement support for colleagues
  
  Legal and ethical frameworks and evidence that underpins the above areas of end-of-life care

Module Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will achieve the following learning outcomes.  

• Demonstrates critical awareness of effective planning for end-of-life care, and how to apply effective communication, advanced care planning and parallel planning into practice.
• Demonstrates a critical understanding of safe, evidence based clinical care practice in holistically and collaboratively assessing, planning and delivering care at end of life
• Identifies and applies appropriate approaches to providing holistic care and support after death for babies, children, young people,  families and colleagues.
